Family Child Support

When divorce and then custody issues hit a family, child support is typically next in line. Most of the time, the non-custodial parent is required to pay child support to the custodial parent. In some cases, the parents work these issues out amongst themselves and solve the problem. However, others need to have a court-order to come to an agreement on how family child support should work. A judge will determine the amount of child support that must be paid to the custodial parent on a monthly basis. He or she will use several methods to determine the amount of child support, including taking into account how much both parents are paid from their jobs, how many children are involved, whether the non-custodial parent has been court-ordered to pay for any other children and more. Children count on support from both their custodial and non-custodial parent. The judge takes the child's best interests to heart and then makes a decision based on what is best for that child or children. If a person defaults on his or her child support payments, several consequences may be faced.

Fast Facts
