Legal Child Support

While some parents work out financial arrangements and child support without the help of a court, some custodial parents need to obtain legal child support orders. This means that the non-custodial parent is ordered to pay a certain amount each month and that if he or she refuses to pay, there are legal consequences that must be faced. Typically, if a non-custodial parent who has been court-ordered to pay a certain amount refuses to do so, he or she can have their wages garnished. This means that the money will come directly from the employer, before the non-custodial parent even receives their pay. Another consequence that can happen for being in arrears with legal child support is the non-custodial parent can have their driver's license suspended. Non-custodial parents can even face jail time if they don't pay child support. The amount of money is determined by several factors, but most courts ensure that the amount is a reasonable amount that the non-custodial parent can pay. Indivudals who find themselves going to child support court should consider contacting a child support attorney to provide important information and representation.
