In Georgia, Vehicle Registrations Halted for Those Delinquent in Child Support

ATLANTA (GA) – The Jones County Tax Commissioner’s Office has joined the Georgia Department of Human Resources (DHR), Office of Child Support Services (OCSS) in taking measures that will deny or suspend vehicle registrations from parents delinquent in child support. Drivers in Jones County will soon be required to park their cars if they do not meet their child support obligation(s). The Official Code of Georgia Annotated (O.C.G.A) § 19-6-28-1 provides for the suspension of, denial of application or renewal of licenses for noncompliance with child support orders. O.C.G.A. further defines a license as a certificate, permit, registration, or any other authorization issued by the Department of Public Safety which allows a person to operate a motor vehicle or engage in a profession, business, occupation, hunting or fishing.

"Children deserve the financial support of not just one, but both parents," says OCSS Director Keith Horton. "We look forward to partnering with the County Tax Commissioner’s Office to ensure that support is obtained."

Although the Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit OCSS has seen a steady increase in collections during the last three years, the suspension and denial of car tag registrations has the potential of generating even greater revenue for child support payments. Since vehicle registrations have to be renewed every year, it is anticipated that this enforcement tool will become one of the most effective enforcement tools available. To stop the suspension process, non-custodial parents will be required to pay off their arrears. Non-custodial parents will be given a 30-day notice during which all arrears can be paid. Individuals desiring to settle the child support obligation will need to bring a check or money order for the full amount owed to their local child support office.

If the non-custodial parent fails to pay off the arrears, the Tax Commissioner’s Office will update the vehicle tracking system with the suspension. At that time, the non-custodial parent will be notified that the suspension is complete. Once the debt has been paid, OCSS will issue a notice of compliance authorizing the reinstatement of vehicle registration privileges.
