Rep. McDermott Introduces Legislation to Restore Child Support Enforcement - Senator Rockefeller Introduces Companion Bill in the Senate

Rep. Jim McDermott (D-WA), chairman of the Ways and Means Income Security and Family Support Subcommittee, introduced legislation in the House today to restore child support enforcement cuts made by the Republican majority in the last Congress before the cuts take effect later this year.

"You don't stand up for kids by standing down the search for deadbeat dads," McDermott declared, "but that's what Congress did at the end of 2005 in the Budget Reconciliation Bill."

Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) is introducing similar legislation in the Senate. "Our efforts to improve child support enforcement have gone a long way to promoting personal responsibility and improving the quality of life for our children," Rockefeller said. "But, I fear that if we don't act now to repeal the impeding cut to this program, we run the risk of hindering these efforts."

Rep. McDermott said: "You can't reconcile allowing deadbeat dads to go MIA. It's time these people know that either they meet their responsibility to their children, or they meet an enforcement officer up close and personal."
